I once heard that the words "cellar door" were the most beautiful in the English language because of the combination of sounds. I think I had heard this from my high school French teacher. One of the few things I remember from high school. A fact I just learned is that JRR Tolkien was interested in this sound combination. So, now instead of "hello" you may greet your guests and friends with "cellar door".
This Lilli Ann coat is from the 50's. There is just something about Lilli Ann when you put on one of these coats, it's magical. They really do live up to their name and you feel like you are wearing a piece of history. I was fortunate to pick this lovely coat up at a big discount because the hem needs to be fixed. I'd love one day to be walking around at a mall or on some obscure trek somewhere and run into someone else with a Lilli Ann coat. Wouldn't this be an interesting connection?
In case you missed my post about the history of Lilli Ann, here it is. If you follow me on Pinterest, I also have a couple of files set up for Lilli Ann garments.
The true color of the coat is more like the above. Below you can see the contrasting fabrics and design elements. Another great feature of this coat is that it has pockets! This must have been a very new feature. I also like that it has longer length in sleeves. I have a late 50's Lilli Ann coat and the sleeves aren't as long. I think because they figured you'd be wearing the long gloves.
Here is a more up close image of my new shoes, vintage 40's.
Love the coat! It's really beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anthea
DeleteWonderful coat, is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThank you Josep:)
DeleteThis coat is so incredibly beautiful! There is no more wonderful coat shape to my mind than a classic princess cut, and this Lilli Ann gem has nailed that down perfectly. I love this coat so much that I honestly think I'd have a heard time not wearing it year round. +35 and dry as a bone out, no worries, a vintage playsuit would look adorable under it! :D (Ok, that might be a stretch, but I'd at least keep it in my closet all year round and never tuck it out of sight with the rest of the winter garb, it's simply to lovely for that.)

I really agree with you about the princess cut. It is just so flattering to the figure. This is the perfect outdoor ice skating coat. There is actually a ring that is about 40 min away that would be nice to wear it too:)
DeleteSo, do you have a coat for every day of the week now?
ReplyDeleteLilli Ann get their own special category where you can never have enough:)) Actually, though I think I'm going to end up selling the Lilli Ann coat with shorter sleeves...still thinking about it:) This coat will stay until I'm a granny:)
DeleteYou look dazzling! You need to keep on with Lilli Ann bc you look so happy wearing her pieces. Gosh and they made things soooo well back then didnt they?? xox
ReplyDeleteThank you lovely Bunny, I look at them like collector pieces too. They really are special. It is amazing the level of condition for something so old. I look at some of my "today" coats that I've worn and there is no way they'd make it 60+ years and look this nice.
DeleteOh, that's the coat that dreams are made of- Seriously, I'm looking for a pattern for a coat just like that! It's absolutely amazing!! I have found some of the best vintage at great prices because it needs a little repair. While I'm fixing a 60 year old piece, I like to pretend that I'm a textile preservation specialist restoring something priceless for my museum of fashion. :P And I agree, a girl can never have too many coats, especially when they are such a bargain and so unique. I probably have about 10 of them. One for every day of the week and 3 extras to choose from if I'm feeling indecisive. In such a busy world with so many other responsibilities, a girl needs something fanciful and lavish just for herself.
ReplyDeleteOh how fun that you are enjoying restoring some of these beauties:) I'd love to see a blog post about what you've done:) Thank you for the lovely comment:)
DeleteYou ABSOLUTELY make that coat magical. Thank you for posting all these outfit photos, you improve my taste in clothing.
ReplyDeleteBoth the shoes and the coat are to-die-for gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love the cut on that coat and that hood. What a divine find!
