Recreating a look - Dior The Bar Suit Part I

One of my goals for the new year is to recreate the iconic Bar Suit.  It isn't exact, but then of course, if it was the true suit we'd be talking $$ and nice vacation homes.   I love to recreate looks and this one is so much fun to do.  I've got a few other things I need and then hopefully sometime early this year I'll be able to put the complete look together.   This has been a great journey for me because I've also been learning about the construction of the garment and also what appeals to me is how was this "New Look" received back in the day?   I've got a few articles from the magazines of this time period (Spring 1947) to also share along this journey.

You will also notice that I am choosing a black hat.   I prefer this over the straw version and a black hat is what was shown at the infamous Dior collection launch of 1947.

Here is a sneak peak at my work in process ensemble, all vintage period pieces:

How lovely is this Dior compact?  I couldn't help but purchase it.  This is not vintage, of course.

The lapel line and the buttons are eerily similar to the Dior version.

A real deal Dior bar suit:

    1. The top is just plain black with the insignia. I give credit to the ladies who have the little brushes to use all the different colors in this compact. lol

  4. Out of all the makeup blogs I follow - I can't believe I've never seen that Dior compact .. lol.

Have you ever watched Lisa Eldridge's youtube video "Beauty - 1940's - 1970's? Lisa is a UK makeup artist and she interviews a lady who collects vintage makeup .. it's really an amazing video. I'd say women have come a long way.

  5. I had the chance to see a BAR model from Dior many years ago in a parisian museum... it feels to be really heavy...

  7. You have done such a tremendously good job at finding very, very similar pieces. I'm all but steadying myself at the moment from the swooning I'm doing over this incredibly lovely take on the classic bar suit, and just know you're going to look resplendently gorgeous in it.

  11. This is pretty embarrassing to ask since there is most likely a simple answer, but why is this iconic suit called a "Bar" suit?

    1. This is actually a very good question! I'm not sure why he called it the Bar suit. I have a couple of books on Dior. I will have to look up and see if there is any reference to why it was this name. Of course, there is the French version name for the suit of Tailleur Bar.
