Vintage Vogue 1949

Head on over to my Facebook page to see some more sneak peak images from vintage Vogue 1949.

DividingVintageMoments

These images are from a bound volume of Vogue magazines from 1949 that I was lucky enough to win.  There is just such a wealth of information in these vintage fashion magazines.  Here are two ads for Adrian dresses.  The first one is just so amazing and I didn't even realize it was an Adrian gown until right now when I was getting ready to post.  It is so artfully named "Back Talk".  Great name!

I'll write a check out right now for $250 for this gown!  Gosh, I can't even imagine what this gown would go for today.  I could sit and stare at this gown for hours!

I'll be posting a bunch of images from this volume so stay tuned for a party of 1949 fashion.  You are all invited.

Adrian is just so amazing!  He is one of my favorite designers.  Here is another ad with matching cape and gloves.  I'll just let the images speak for themselves.  I also hope to do a detailed blog post about Adrian in the future.

The Adrian Look 1947

I am exploring the year 1947 in fashion.  Ahh, all the beautiful collections and of this year!  I have the Vogue issue from April 1947 when Vogue first discussed Dior's new collection (the New Look)which I will share images of in a future post and within this issue is the forever fabulous Adrian.

In the scheme of things, there really are not a lot of images out there in internet land of Adrian gowns.  Also, in general, you don't see many Adrian gowns/dresses or suits come up for sale.  Of course, I can understand why.

I have more articles to share on this iconic designer in the future.  I thought I'd share these images that are all from one issue April 1947 Vogue.   As you read the passage of "The Adrian Look For 1947", don't you truly get the feeling of art and form of clothing?  It's amazing.  So much a different mentality than today.

For lots more Adrian eye candy, please also check out my Pinterest Board.   I've also posted an article from Adrian here.

Auction Highlights

There was a vintage couture auction yesterday at Leslie Hindman.  I figured I'd share a few highlights...

I thought the Adrian items went rather cheaply.  I hope one day soon to own a garment by Adrian.

Adrian gown sold for $688

Adrian Suit  $687

Christian Dior Suit  1950, totally fabulous!!!  $5,500 Auction estimate $400-$600 yea right a little on the low side lol.

Another Dior 1950 Suit sold for $5,500 these are going for as much as the gowns.  Quite shocked by the price.  Wonder if they are going to museums?

Dior 1950 $5,500 sale.  $5,500 must have been the magic price on these Diors.  Holy moley!  I need to go back in time and grab a bunch of these.

You can see the results on the Leslie Hindman website.

Gilbert Adrian

I had no idea until reading the below article that the designer Gilbert Adrian was also a fine artist.  But, it makes sense because there is a great visual appeal about his fashion designs.  As I mentioned in a prior post, his creations are highly collectible and bidding wars ensue.
I thought the below article on Gilbert Adrian was fascinating.  You just never know where you will find interesting articles.  I found it in Look Magazine from 1951.   There was no mention about Adrian on the cover or in the description when I bought it.

This is another great and fascinating thing about vintage fashion is the correlation of art movements to fashion...love it!   I have a great book on Cubism and fashion that I hope to share images of in a future blog post.

Adrian is known for high-end fashion design for the stars and film.  The movie "The Women" has many of his fashion designs in it.   Have to see if I can find the full movie online!  The fashions are fabulous in this movie.  Anyone see it?  Adrian died in 1959.  His paintings have a surrealism about them.  I'm sure he was influenced by Dali.   I had to Photoshop together some of the images since Look Magazine is rather large.  But, if you click on the image, it makes it easier to read.  It's kind of interesting how you see this typical family portrait behind such a surreal tribal painting.  It's like they are unaware of the painting behind them.  Say cheese for the camera:))

The colors in the painting echo the dress. Very interesting!  But, you don't see a splash of red in the dress.   The dress remains with a cool color scheme.

How structured and feminine is this suit?  Amazing!  Note to self:  Add to wardrobe:)
