Thrifting

I got this lovely dress in the mail today.  I hope to take a picture with it on later in the week. This was a new, old stock dress.   I found it fascinating that it had these pads under the arms.   Do any of you have dress with these pads still under the arms?  It seems a little uncomfortable to wear them as it's not quite soft.  It has some kind of paper in it.  I'll probably take them out as they really aren't needed.  I'm so glad that nowadays we have great deodorants on the market.

Today, I decided to check out a Goodwill store in a ritzy area.  I thought I might be able to find some cheap vintage well-made items.  Goodwill is certainly not what it used to be.  I think I have better luck on ebay with clothing.  Although, at least you can try things on here.  It's amazing the price they charge for some things.

I noticed this pair of Joan and David shoes that had a vintage vibe.  To me, Joan and David shoes are mid-line nothing exclusive.  I figured maybe $5 for them since they were well loved! When I asked, they said $50.  I'm like "holy cow" for these?

At this Goodwill, they had Chanel and Prada but they also priced them very high.  I doubt anyone who goes into Goodwill is going to pay $300 for a used pair of Prada shoes.

Here's an image of the $50 shoes that were pretty worn (did not buy, of course)..

I thought it was interesting to see such expensive designers at Goodwill.  I believe the jacket was priced at $175.  It could have been a bit higher.   I know that new it would retail $1,000 but still.  This jacket was probably 20 years old and used...it's Goodwill!

  1. Girl, you need to come to the goodwill here in IN. Very few items, until household items, are very reasonable. Most are 80s/90s vintage. But some of the stuff if accessorized appropriately can have that 40s/50s look to it. Also a friend of mine picked up a bag of various high end yarns at our goodwill for a fraction of what it would have cost her.

  2. Can't wait to see how this gorgeous skirt comes out. I can see how you couldn't resist it. I can imagine you wearing it!!

Nice scores! I once found an Escada vest at a Value Village and I so wish I still had it. It was beautiful but back then I was just in the dark on how to wear things.

  3. Joanna...the delicate florals and color on the first dress is so pretty.

I can't believe that the Goodwill would price USED Prada shoes at $300.......especially when you can find NEW 1 or 2 season old Prada's at TJ Maxx for around that same price!

  4. It is crazy about the price of things isn't it! I think it all depends on the Goodwill you go too. I'm finding better luck through vintage sites and ebay:)

  5. I hate when Goodwill prices things way too high - it's ridiculous. The bottom line is the item is used, worn and probably way outdated. Nobody is going to pay those prices! Glad you found something that was priced right to leave with :)

  6. That is mind bogglingly nuts! I've seen a few steep prices (for only slightly high end) brands on items at Value Village, but never have I spotted such a steep price at the Salvation Army (which is probably as close as we come to the Goodwill up here in Canada).

Your new dress is just lovely! I've picked up a couple of vintage garments over the years that still had dress shields in them, too. If they're in good shape, I just leave them in, if they're beat up or stained I carefully remove them.

    1. Thank you Jessica. I had to take these guards off unfortunately because they were a bit uncomfortable. But, it is such an interesting thing. It makes sense because then you can change them. I'm amazed they didn't have better deodorants back in the day. I never realized how much damage (discoloration) can be caused because these ladies didn't have the proper deodorants.
